A Cummins turbo diesel motor comes with a pretty good hp and tq from the factory. But who wants to settle for a stock Cummins, your grandpa? The first thing to do with your Cummins is get more fuel to the injectors. So for your 1st gen you loosin some screw and a special wrench since its all mechanical. Your 2 gen p pump you would remove or get a different size fuel plate then take the govern arm off or adjust is movement. For you 2nd gen 24v vp44 stick a real nice turner or programmer on it and the same for you 3rd and 4th gen Cummins. The next upgrade is a turbo and bigger injectors. The reason for turbo is to give you more boost and to keep your exhaust gas temperature down. The reason to the bigger injectors at the same time is to be able to spool up your turbo to produce boost and power faster. The injectors can me measured in hp witch is the amount of injection pump horsepower it can support or percentage over stock size. Doing these preformance upgrades can cost any where from $1000 to $5000 depending on what quality you get and the year of your Cummins.

The Cummins turbo diesel is very simple for these reasons. The first reason is being that it only has 6 cylinders. A only having 6 cylinders means it has a better bore to stroke ratio, very simple design with straight flow of the motor. The bore to stroke ratio in a Cummins makes the motor have lots of torque and efficiency. The bore to stroke ratio is very important when trying to produce lots of torque in an engine. This ratio means that the size of the piston and the length of how far the piston moves is the bore to stroke. In a Cummins motor the bore to stroke is also the same roughly 4 inches both ways. The Cummins motor has a very simple design with how the injection and exhaust flow almost in a straight design. This makes the Cummins engine very simple and gives it good flow to be efficient. The better the flow of the engine the better efficient its gonna have. The flow of the motor also increased the amount performance the motor has.

The 3rd generation Cummins turbo diesel started 2003 to 2007.5. The 3rd generation Cummins has not changed much besides some front end body style and the newer moderan body style. The 3rd gen was a 5.9 liter straight 6 cylinder turbocharged engine with a modern CP3 injection pump. The 3rd gen CP3 injection pump is the fastest injection pump that's been strapped to a Cummins engine. The CP3 injection pump is all electronically controlled pump. The 3 gen really was the start of what can we do to change the program to make it flow more fuel. The CP3 pump is controlled by a computer that has parameters that can be changed make the injection come alive. The parameters can be changed to make the motor turn certain rpms. In 2006 the Cummins was the power house of the dodge 2500 and 3500 mega cab 4 door truck. The 3rd generation Cummins was a power house that will always be used for its power.
