The second generation of the Cummins changed in a couple different ways. The second gen was from 1994-2002. In 1994 the Dodge pickup got a fresh new look a long with a new injection pump the p7100. The second generation body style lasted until 2002. The p7100 injection pump lasted until 1998 when in 1998.5 they switched to the vp44 and to a 24v head. The p7100 was the best mechanical injection pump. In 1998.5 was when the game was changed, the new high flowing 24 valve head provided much more flow throw the motor. The previous second gens had 12 valve head up until then. Also in 1998.5 the vp44 electronically controlled pump came out. This pump was the first injection pump that wasnt all mechanical.The vp44 lasted until 2002.

The first generation Cummins is where is all started for the daily driver diesel. The first gen stated in 1989 with a non inter-cooled Cummins. The non inter-cooled Cummins just didnt have a cooler to cool the air coming off the turbo, so there was a tube that came straight from the turbo to the in take manifold. In 91 Cummins added the inter-cooler for better performance. The Cummins had a VE44 all mechanical injection pump. This pump was a rotary style pump. This injection pump lasted until more horsepower gains where needed in 1994. The first gen Cummins also had the square body dodge style. A good first gen with no rust and all original is very few and far between but the ones that are out there are some of the most iconic trucks ever to be produced for its time.
