A Cummins engine has a really low rpm range witch is nice but for performance reasons it can really be a pain. A stock Cummins will only turn about 3200 rpm. A Cummins can turn 4000 no problem with some kind of turner or programmer. When you are trying to build a big horsepower Cummins you want some higher rpm's. Many high horsepower trucks turn 5000 rpms so they can spool there monster turbos. For a Cummins to turn high rpms you need to have the fuel to support it. This means a monster injection pumps to put the fuel into the injectiors that need to be able to put the fuel into the cylinder. Witch mean lots of money to buy these parts or if you have your own extruder to bore the holes in your stock injectiors out. Those big injection pump or pumps your gonna are really expensive because they have to precision made with no defaults. The next expense is the billet internal for your engine cause stock bottom end and pistons arent gonna handle much over 1300 hp witch seams like to much but once you get hook your set.

A Cummins turbo diesel motor comes with a pretty good hp and tq from the factory. But who wants to settle for a stock Cummins, your grandpa? The first thing to do with your Cummins is get more fuel to the injectors. So for your 1st gen you loosin some screw and a special wrench since its all mechanical. Your 2 gen p pump you would remove or get a different size fuel plate then take the govern arm off or adjust is movement. For you 2nd gen 24v vp44 stick a real nice turner or programmer on it and the same for you 3rd and 4th gen Cummins. The next upgrade is a turbo and bigger injectors. The reason for turbo is to give you more boost and to keep your exhaust gas temperature down. The reason to the bigger injectors at the same time is to be able to spool up your turbo to produce boost and power faster. The injectors can me measured in hp witch is the amount of injection pump horsepower it can support or percentage over stock size. Doing these preformance upgrades can cost any where from $1000 to $5000 depending on what quality you get and the year of your Cummins.

The Cummins turbo diesel is very simple for these reasons. The first reason is being that it only has 6 cylinders. A only having 6 cylinders means it has a better bore to stroke ratio, very simple design with straight flow of the motor. The bore to stroke ratio in a Cummins makes the motor have lots of torque and efficiency. The bore to stroke ratio is very important when trying to produce lots of torque in an engine. This ratio means that the size of the piston and the length of how far the piston moves is the bore to stroke. In a Cummins motor the bore to stroke is also the same roughly 4 inches both ways. The Cummins motor has a very simple design with how the injection and exhaust flow almost in a straight design. This makes the Cummins engine very simple and gives it good flow to be efficient. The better the flow of the engine the better efficient its gonna have. The flow of the motor also increased the amount performance the motor has.

The 3rd generation Cummins turbo diesel started 2003 to 2007.5. The 3rd generation Cummins has not changed much besides some front end body style and the newer moderan body style. The 3rd gen was a 5.9 liter straight 6 cylinder turbocharged engine with a modern CP3 injection pump. The 3rd gen CP3 injection pump is the fastest injection pump that's been strapped to a Cummins engine. The CP3 injection pump is all electronically controlled pump. The 3 gen really was the start of what can we do to change the program to make it flow more fuel. The CP3 pump is controlled by a computer that has parameters that can be changed make the injection come alive. The parameters can be changed to make the motor turn certain rpms. In 2006 the Cummins was the power house of the dodge 2500 and 3500 mega cab 4 door truck. The 3rd generation Cummins was a power house that will always be used for its power.

The second generation of the Cummins changed in a couple different ways. The second gen was from 1994-2002. In 1994 the Dodge pickup got a fresh new look a long with a new injection pump the p7100. The second generation body style lasted until 2002. The p7100 injection pump lasted until 1998 when in 1998.5 they switched to the vp44 and to a 24v head. The p7100 was the best mechanical injection pump. In 1998.5 was when the game was changed, the new high flowing 24 valve head provided much more flow throw the motor. The previous second gens had 12 valve head up until then. Also in 1998.5 the vp44 electronically controlled pump came out. This pump was the first injection pump that wasnt all mechanical. The vp44 lasted until 2002.

The first generation Cummins is where is all started for the daily driver diesel. The first gen stated in 1989 with a non inter-cooled Cummins. The non inter-cooled Cummins just didnt have a cooler to cool the air coming off the turbo, so there was a tube that came straight from the turbo to the in take manifold. In 91 Cummins added the inter-cooler for better performance. The Cummins had a VE44 all mechanical injection pump. This pump was a rotary style pump. This injection pump lasted until more horsepower gains where needed in 1994. The first gen Cummins also had the square body dodge style. A good first gen with no rust and all original is very few and far between but the ones that are out there are some of the most iconic trucks ever to be produced for its time.

In the early 90's when the Cummins turbo diesel was put in the square body dodge pick up. The square body dodge pick up changed in 94 to a "big rig" look. The reason for this is that the because the Cummins gave the dodge pick up truck a much needed motor improvent the cummins gave the dodge pickup truck the heavy load hauler look. This style lasted until 03 when the front grill and bumper where changed to a more moderan look. In 07 they changed the grill and bumper.

Cummins turbo diesel has made history in the diesel world. Cummins first starting building straight 6 /5.9 liter turbo diesel for a dodge 2500 and 3500 in 1989. A lot of those trucks where prototypes and are hard to find. Although in 1990's the cummins turbo diesel was mass produced in the dodge pick up truck. Throughout the years of these motors have changed by injection pump and number of valves pre cylinder. Also the year 89-91 had no intercoolers to cool the air produced off the turbo from then on intercoolers where factor. The 89-93 had a VE rotary injection pump. Then from 94-early 98.5 had a had the most iconic injection pump from its time P7100 injection pump. These years had a all mechanical injection pump and 12 valves in 2 pre cylinder. Then from the late 98.5 to 02 had a not so famous vp44 electronically controlled injection and the late 98.5 the cummins are all 24 valves 4 pre cylinder. From 03 to present have whats called a cp3 injection pump. This pump is controlled electronically controlled as well. This pump is the fastest cummins injection pump made. Although injection pumps are the same in 07.5 cummins made a 6.7 straight 6 cylinder because of the EPA emission requirements. That sums up the basic cummins history.
